Swiss citizenship test — canton of Ticino
Ordinary naturalisation in Tessin requires 10 years of Swiss residence and 5 years in the canton, plus cultural and legal integration.
Residency and integration requirements
You need a valid C permit and must have lived in Switzerland for at least 10 years with a B, C or F permit. Years spent in Switzerland between ages 8 and 18 count double, but you must document at least 6 years of actual residence. You must also have lived in Tessin for at least 5 years and in your municipality of application for at least 3 years, including the 2 years before your naturalisation request.
Integration requires that you know Italian at a minimum level (A2 for writing, B1 for speaking), history, geography and civic knowledge. You must participate in social and cultural life, contribute economically or pursue training, maintain relations with Swiss citizens, be familiar with Swiss living conditions and encourage your family members' integration.
Legally and ethically, you must respect the values of the Federal and Cantonal Constitutions. You must not have criminal convictions in the Swiss criminal register, an open criminal procedure or an enforcement procedure. You must have always paid your municipal, cantonal and federal taxes and must not have received social assistance in the 10 years before your request, at the time of the request or during the procedure.
The naturalisation procedure
To apply for naturalisation, make an appointment with your municipality's Chancellery. During the meeting, the Chancellery will check whether you meet the requirements and provide you with the forms and the list of required documents.
Complete the forms you received and gather the requested documents according to the form's instructions. Then make an appointment with your municipality's Chancellery to submit your complete file.
Your application will be examined in sequence by your municipality, then by the Confederation, and finally by the canton. Throughout the procedure, you must demonstrate that you meet all naturalisation criteria.
