Ordinary naturalisation
To apply for ordinary naturalisation, you must hold a settlement permit C at the time of application. You must have lived in Switzerland for 10 years, including 5 years in Appenzell I.Rh. At least 2 of those 5 years must be continuous immediately before naturalisation.
The canton examines whether you meet legal requirements before sending your application to the federal level. You must speak German at the level required by citizenship law and demonstrate integration into Swiss conditions. This includes familiarity with Swiss customs and respect for Swiss law. There is no legal right to naturalisation.
You must first submit a personal curriculum vitae to the Naturalisation Secretariat before receiving application forms. Forms are handed out at an in-person meeting at the Secretariat, where the procedure is explained. Processing takes about 1.5 years.
Simplified naturalisation
You may qualify for simplified naturalisation if you are a foreign spouse of a Swiss national or the child of a Swiss parent. Since February 2018, young foreigners of third generation whose families have lived in Switzerland for generations and are well integrated may also apply through this procedure.
For simplified naturalisation, only the federal level is responsible for the entire procedure and decision. You can obtain forms from the Naturalisation Secretariat in Appenzell or directly from the State Secretariat for Migration in Bern. Send your application to the State Secretariat for Migration, PO Box, 3003 Bern. Processing takes about one year.
