Swiss citizenship test — canton of Luzern
Ordinary naturalisation in Canton Lucerne: requirements and the process involving your commune, the canton, and the federal government.
Requirements for ordinary naturalisation
Ordinary naturalisation is the most common case in Canton Lucerne. You must meet four key requirements: ten years of residence in Switzerland, a settlement permit (C permit), successful integration and familiarity with local living conditions.
The ten-year residence requirement has exceptions. You submit your application to your home commune.
The approval process at three levels
The process involves three levels: your commune, the canton and the federal government. Your commune reviews your application and grants communal citizenship if it approves. The federal government grants federal naturalisation approval. The canton grants cantonal citizenship.
After your commune grants communal citizenship, it sends your file to the cantonal department for review. If the assessment is positive, the department requests federal approval. Once federal approval is received, the canton grants you cantonal citizenship. The entire process at the federal and cantonal level takes four to six months.
