Requirements at each level

Ordinary naturalisation in Switzerland is decided at three levels: the federal government, the canton and your municipality. Each level sets different residence requirements that you must meet. The federal government requires ten years of residence in Switzerland in total, with at least three years in the five years before your application. You must also hold a residence permit (C permit) at the time of application.

Canton Zug requires five years of residence in the canton. Your municipality requires three years of continuous residence at the time you submit your application. All levels assess your suitability: whether you are familiar with Swiss, cantonal and local customs, have sufficient German language skills, and can demonstrate stable personal, family and financial circumstances.
